One aspect of photography that can get overlooked is the inclusion of props. Props can be a fun addition to a shoot and allow a couples personalities to come through, but they can also be a distraction. It can sometimes be a difficult balance to determine when and where a prop is needed. The one prop we try to include as often as we can is the trusty umbrella.
Beyond their obvious benefit protecting from the rain, the umbrella can serve many other functions. Their unique shape can be used to create interest when the background is lacking, we can use the umbrella itself to frame the couple, and we can use the umbrella as a sun or wind block. They also give couples who are uncomfortable in the front of the camera something to focus on. Clear umbrellas in particular are great as they don't block the light, and can be used to create some truly memorable looks. As photographers, we value the versatility that umbrella's provide, and that is why we always bring an umbrella.
